Susan Landau competed in STS in 1972 before becoming a renowned mathematician, engineer, author and international cybersecurity expert. As a professor of computer science and policy at Tufts University, Landau researches the intersection of cybersecurity, national security, law and government. Throughout her career, she has taught at multiple universities, analyzed privacy initiatives at Google and testified before the U.S. Congress on the risks of wiretapping. Landau is a recipient of the Anita Borg Women of Vision Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and is an inductee of the National Cybersecurity Hall of Fame.

Landau won third place at STS for her project on perfect numbers. During STS she said, 鈥淪ome students today feel that science is a cold, hard-hearted creature, that cares not for man 鈥 I do not share this belief. I feel science is humane, and that greater knowledge can only benefit mankind.鈥
